How I Started My Detailing Business; From the Driveway to the Door

Kamran · Maryland Started June 2025 ~10 hr/wk ~$1,200/mo
So basically, I have been detailing cars for a while now. My dad always kept our cars clean growing up. He would wash them regularly and take care of them, and that's honestly how I learned. I never really thought about making money off it. It was just something I knew how to do. Then in the summer of 2025, my cousin and I were like, why not just go door-to-door and offer to detail people's cars? So we did, and within a few knocks, we got our first customer, and we were hyped. We thought it was gonna take off from there. But then reality hit, and that didn't really happen. Most people we knocked on doors for just weren't interested. So I had to switch it up. I started personally asking people at the masjid since they already knew me, and I made an Instagram page where I'd post my before-and-after photos of the cars I detailed. That's when things actually started picking up. People would see the work, tell their friends, and it just kept growing little by little. Once I started making more money, I was able to upgrade my equipment, which honestly made a big difference in the quality of my work. Now I'm doing around 10 to 15 details a month, and I'm doing all this while being a full-time high school senior. There were plenty of times I was pulling up to details before school or right after. It's a lot, but it's worth it because I built it myself. Now I am planning on scaling it more and trying door-to-door sales, but with a different approach.
